Character
Name: Sebastian Vael
Category: 2
Medium: Dragon Age 2
Age: 41
Race: Human
Place of Origin: Starkhaven
Concept:
He’s a privileged noble, sheltered his whole life, the youngest son of the ruling family of Starkhaven, detached from what is happened in the real world. He rebelled against his parents’ intent to give him to the Chantry (as was common amongst youngest family members), living up to a self-made reputation as the wicked Prince. It was somewhat ironic that he ended up choosing to live in the Chantry, throwing himself into life there, loving the Maker. If his family hadn’t been murdered, leading him to meet Hawke, and beginning his travels on that slippery slope away from the Chantry, he would have been happy there for the rest of his life.
However, with the destruction of the Chantry, gone is the mild mannered brother of the Chantry, instead he is embracing his role as the vengeful Prince, out for revenge on Anders for what he did for his family.
He’s an impulsive man, allowing himself to be ruled by his emotions. In many ways, despite his time at the Chantry, he still reacts like the spoiled child he once was.
He is still devout to the ideals of the Chantry, but instead of being devoted to helping people is now devoted to following the words of the Chant of Light directly, especially in relation to mages. In many ways, the Chantry is a crux for him - a new addiction when his old ones of drink and sex got to be old hat.
Since U Been Gone:
After Hawke refused to kill Anders, Sebastian immediately left Kirkwall, not caring who won the battle. To him, the real battle was still to come.
Calling on every connection he made since his family died, and the money he’d saved up as his share of the ‘work’ he’d done for Hawke he set about retaking Starkhaven. It took him nearly a year, and it ended up being far bloodier than he had wanted all those years ago, but he didn’t care now. He needed to take Starkhaven to gain the army he needed to hunt down Anders.
Once he finally took Starkhaven, deposing his cousin (though he couldn’t bring himself to kill him - he’s currently languishing in the dungeon’s below Starkhaven), he set about consolidating his position. Whereas once he may have been a benevolent prince, who would have been an easy target for other noble houses, he wasn’t quite brutal in his rule, but his anger had to find an outlet.
Using the funds of the Starkhaven throne, he assembled one of the largest armies ever seen in the Free Marches, and set to searching for Anders. When rumors came that Anders was seen in Kirkwall, he launched an assault, only to be pushed back by Guard-Captain Aveline and her troops.
Left to lick his wounds at his defeat, he didn’t give up his search for Anders, but it moved elsewhere. However, he still looks towards Kirkwall - the situation there is not improving.
He has watched the rise of the Inquisition with interest. There is obviously power there, and given the influence it has over the way the Chantry is developing while waiting for a new Divine to take over, he wants to know more. He respects what it has done, but doesn’t like it’s attitude towards mages, and the freedoms it has allowed them.
Recruitment: Post-DA: I, I can see Sebastian either turning up at the doors of Skyhold demanding what they are going to do about Anders now that the threat to Thedas has been dealt with, or else there is the possibility of working with him through War Table missions - there will always be chances to go back to Kirkwall, after all.
I would love to play it out - he is not going to be easy to convince, especially with Anders alive, plus his obligations to Starkhaven, balanced against his obligations to the Chantry.
Plot preferences: I really want to play Sebastian DA:I, era, playing with his decline into a vengeful Prince, and working out the best way to interact with everyone else. It’s not going to be easy, but sometimes negative CR is as satisfying as positive, and there be plenty for me to build on with him.
